Original Air Date: May 9, 1996 Original Airing: Live! With Regis & Kathy Lee, May 1996 Transcribed by: Kevin mrdata@primenet.com Regis: ...sort of a takeoff of Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise. Kathy Lee: Sort of? Regis: Just released his tenth album, "Bad Hair Day", here's "Weird Al" with a brand new original song, "Since You've Been Gone". [Al comes on stage and sings "Since You've Been Gone" with pre-recorded background vocals] Regis: "Weird Al" Yankovic, right here. "Weird Al", how ya doin'? Al: Good to see you. Kathy Lee: Hi Al! Al: Good to see you! Regis: Al, the shirt remains the same from the picture we took, but the shoes are different! Al: [laughs] Kathy Lee: Well, you know, he did walk across the country. Al: The underwear's different but I change every now and then. Regis: "Weird Al"... Al: Yes? Regis: ...that wasn't a parody, that was an original song, yeah? Al: I just wanted you to know that I do straight, serious love songs every now and then. Regis: And that was one of them? Al: That was one of them, yeah. Regis: I see. Kathy Lee: And, well, we couldn't understand the lyrics but I'm sure they're very moving. Regis: Yeah. Al: [laughs] Kathy Lee: Where we were sitting, I said, "Now who's he parodying, what is this?" Regis: Yeah. Al: [laughs] Kathy Lee: The Coolio thing I've got. Al: Ah, okay, good. Kathy Lee: Yeah, yeah. Regis: Yes, Amish Paradise. Al: Uh huh. Kathy Lee: And was that Florence Henderson? Al: Yes it was. Regis: Oh my gosh. Kathy Lee: That wacky Flo, that wacky Flo. Regis: How did you research the Amish, by...? Al: Oh, I watched "The Witness" a couple times. Regis: The movie "Witness". Al: Oh yeah, I wouldn't wanna be offending about this, ya know. Get all the facts straight here. Kathy Lee: Do you know he's parodied you, mister? Regis: Really? Al: Oh, I mentioned the show on, ah, one of the songs on the album called "Syndicated Incorporated". The line of the chorus goes, "think I'm losin' my sanity, I'm addicted to Regis and Kathy Lee." So you've made it now! You've made the big time. Kathy Lee: Yeah, now, we were upset for a few minutes, we've never ever... Regis: Yeah, you've never really heard. What were you, originally what did you want to do in life, Al? Al: Uhh, well...gee, I wanted to be an architect originally. I still have my degree, so, ya know, if this thing falls through, ya know, I got a day job waitin' for me. Regis: Are you a...do you have an architectual degree? Al: Yes I do. Regis: I'll be darned, how do ya like that? Kathy Lee: Do you do Weeeird buildings? Al: [laughs] Regis: And when did you become, what made you become "Weird Al" instead of Architect Al? Al: Ah, well...I found out I wasn't that good at Architecture school, and,ya know, I just didn't really fit in normal everyday life I guess for some reason, so... Regis: I wonder why? Kathy Lee: But isn't it true that most of these people, most of these you've parodied over the years, have you done it with their okay and they've all approved that... Al: Absolutely. Kathy Lee: And now, I guess that is it Coolio that's not thrilled about this? Al: Ah, yeah...I don't know what happened there, some kind of miscommunication. I was under the impression that he'd given his permission and blessing... Kathy Lee: 'Cause you are a sweet guy, you're not trying to hurt anyone. Al: Oh, I know, I know! I try to, ya know! Regis: You're just "Weird Al"! Al: Yeah...I don't know what happened there. Regis: Why is Coolio being weird about this? Al: [laughs] Either he changed his mind or he got some bad information, I really don't know what happened. Kathy Lee: Okay. Regis: Well... Kathy Lee: I hope you can patch it up. Al: Yeah. Regis: Yes, I do hope so too. "Weird Al" Yankovic, album is "Bad Hair Day" in the stores right now. Thanks, Al. Nice to see ya. Al: Thank you. [shows picture of album cover]
