Original Publication: On Prodigy at 11:00 PM Eastern On July 11th 1996 Original Interviewer: Questions were received from Various People Submitted to Al-oholics Anonymous by Joe "The Comfy Chair" Krause Moderator (Speaker) It's a real pleasure to welcome a true COMIC GENIUS tonight folks... Please welcome, the great WEIRD AL YANKOVIC!!!!!!!! Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Hey everybody! Moderator (Speaker) Great to have you here, Weird AL... Moderator (Speaker) Let's get right to the questions. Teddy J03 (PRODIGY Member) Hi Weird Al. I've enjoyed your comedy over the years. What are you working on now? Any new parodys coming soon? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) The next lp is aways off, we're still in the middle of the "Bad Hair" tour. There are a few TV and feature projects in the works, but it's a little too soon to talk about them. Look for the tour in a town near you. Moderator (Speaker) "Weird Al" will be performing in the following cities this month: Cedar Rapids, 14; Rosemont, Ill, 15; St Paul, 16; Peoria 17; Sioux City, 18; Wichita, 19; Omaha, 20; Denver, 22; Salem, OR, 24; Kelseyville, CA, 25; Sacramento, 26; Santa Cruz, 27th... Moderator (Speaker) In September, look for "Weird Al" in Las Vegas (6th); Valencia, Ca (7th); Spokane (10th); Yakima (26th); Bakersfield, Ca (10/2)... KingBuzzo1 (PRODIGY Member) how did you get started? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) That was through the Dr. Demento radio show. I sent him tapes when I was in my teens. He played them on his radio show and things just snowballed from there. The first song that made it only vinyl was "My Bologna," set to the tune of "My Sharona." brad wp (PRODIGY Member) Al, what is the strangest thing a fan has ever said to you? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Akeeno det strag.... RONNIERAYGUN (PRODIGY Member) what inspired you to make fun of other people's music Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) It was just kind of a natural thing to do. Most kids go through the phase where they listen to the radio and change the words around to amuse their friends and I never stopped. Cooldude91 (PRODIGY Member) Will You Make Another Movie? Maybe on HBO? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I don't have any objection to that....I'd love to. Cooldude91 (PRODIGY Member) Will you ever be on Wheel Of Fortune or Jeopardy? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I already was on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, with James Brown and Little Richard. I haven't done Jeopardy! yet, but it would be fun, someday. waveatme (PRODIGY Member) I think you should have your own variety show, kind of in the genre of "Sonny & Cher"....ever think about it? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Fine with me, let's sign the contract/ jol13 (PRODIGY Member) What is your favorite song you made Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) That's a tough one...among the originals, I can't narrow it down to seven or eight--I picked most of my favorites for the box set, which came out a few years ago. We had 50 over 4 CDs. So check it out. Moderator (Speaker) Weird Al Yankovic's latest work is BAD HAIR DAY. It's his 10th studio album (his fourth as a producer) and his first new full-length offering since 1993's gold ALAPALOOZA. The disc features 5 brand new parodies of some of the biggest hits of the past year, including the first single, AMISH PARADISE, a take-off of Coolio's megahit and Grammy Award-winning effort, GANGSTA'S PARADISE. Moderator (Speaker) Another of Weird Al's parodies is CAVITY SEARCH, which is a spoof of U2's HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME... Please write to our guest now. BeyondAny (PRODIGY Member) Hi Al, My friend and I are big fans of yours, I own the box set and UHF, and albums and music videos and all that. I saw you a few weeks ago at the Starlight in Latham, New York, and It was wonderful. I loved your Yoda encore, but could you please explain that part where you all stopped and did that acapella body movement thing? thanks! Do you have a Fan club? where do I write? PLEASE come back to the Ny/MA area, I live in the Berkshires. you could play at tanglewood! thanks for coming on!! Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) The Yoda chant, which a friend of mine taught me...I thought it would be funny to add some choreography and have the whole band do it with me in unison. D MOCEANU7 (PRODIGY Member) How old are you? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) 36 BeyondAny (PRODIGY Member) I heard at your starlight music theater concert some new parodies, such as the friends parody "I'll be bare for you" (could you explain that one?) and the Offspring parody. Will these be on a new album? When will it be out? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) There's no way of telling. I'm at the mercy of pop culture. It won't be before next year. I don't want to write on the road, so I won't start until the tour's over. Cooldude91 (PRODIGY Member) Will we see you on any talk shows promoting your tour? If so tell us when. Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) A lot of local shows...I don't know of any national shows coming up... .the best thing to do is to check Bermuda's web site. He has all the latest information. brad wp (PRODIGY Member) Al, I was wondering if you were ever involved in a musical program at church when you were a little kid. Was the accordian an accepted instrument? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I don't believe so, no. Cooldude91 (PRODIGY Member) Do you surf the Internet? If so, what are your favorite web sites? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I have a working knowledge of the Internet, because my drummer is on line all the time, and I look over his shoulder, so I'm familiar with the other Weird Al pages out there. But he's more into it than I am. Moderator (Speaker) After the chat, get the latest news on Weird Al by visiting... http://www.allamermusic.com NJ27STEVE (PRODIGY Member) What will be your next parody? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I have no idea. NJ27STEVE (PRODIGY Member) Why aren't you watching the Republican Convention right now? LOL :) Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Cause I'm on Prodigy right now. HammySync1 (PRODIGY Member) So Al have you heard the Presidents of the USA's song about you yet. You know "We're going to the Weird Al Show" I was wondering if you could send me a copy. Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) No, I've heard it exists and I'd love to hear a copy of it, but I haven't yet. M486 (PRODIGY Member) What is your real name Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I only tell this to a few people that I can trust, but....my real name is Al. Moderator (Speaker) Weird Al Yankovic is currently on tour... His band includes guitarist Jim West; bassist Steve Jay; drummer/percussionist Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz and keyboardist Ruben Valtierra... Moderator (Speaker) "Weird Al" will be performing in the following cities this month: Cedar Rapids, 14; Rosemont, Ill, 15; St Paul, 16; Peoria 17; Sioux City, 18; Wichita, 19; Omaha, 20; Denver, 22; Salem, OR, 24; Kelseyville, CA, 25; Sacramento, 26; Santa Cruz, 27th... WeirdrThanAl (PRODIGY Member) Who influenced you in making most of your music? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) A lot of the music I listen to for my personal enjoyment is fairly eclectic....rock, British 60s invasion rock, I tend to like things that are quirky and off center. Devo, Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Aerosmith.... Crafty Stef (PRODIGY Member) Hiya, Al. I love your music. I recently bought "BAD HAIRD DAY". How old are you and are you married? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Nope. Moderator (Speaker) Weird Al Yankovic is currently reviewing your questions and answering as quickly as he can. Please continue to submit your questions. Thanks for joining us tonight... treesoup (PRODIGY Member) hey weird.....are you ever gonna do your own original album?? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I don't think I'd do that, just like I wouldn't do an album of all parodies. The 50-50 mix has served me well over the years. SanDiego 26 (PRODIGY Member) any songs that you wanted to do but the original artist flat out said, "No"? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) That happens rarely, but it does happen on occasion. The only one I can mention I can't because he doesn't have a name anymore. It's a symbol. Most artists are actually pretty flattered when they find out there's going to be a Weird Al parody. In some weird way, it's a sing they've finally made it in the music field. Moderator (Speaker) that's "sign," not sing... ehrh (PRODIGY Member) is your father a famous polka band leader? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) No, that's a question I get all the time. People think I'm somehow related to Frankie Yankovic, America's Polka King. We're aquainted, but not related. movie5 (PRODIGY Member) mr. AL, just how weird are you? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I live in LA, so a lot of the people I meet on the street are even weirder than I am. But I pick my moments. I'm weirder on stage than I am when I'm shopping for broccoli. MR REBEL (PRODIGY Member) al what was it like in doing im fat and merking michael j. Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Fat was a lot of fun to do. It was two days of wearing that fat suit. Like dancing with a sauna attached to you. Meeting Michael was great. he told me he got a big kick of the parodies. DeLorme (PRODIGY Member) Do you ever think that you will run out of ways to parodize songs? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) As long as there are hit songs, I'll never run out of material. HemoG0blin (PRODIGY Member) Will you be contributing any rare songs to this year's Basement Tapes? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) More than likely. The Basement Tapes are a good way for me to get my unreleased songs out to the public. I can't tell you what they'll be, but more likely I'll be a part of it. Rum Coke (PRODIGY Member) I would also like to thank you for helping make the term Nerd a respectable term. Nerds (in reality) are what make the world a better place. We need your off key humor don't ever stop. Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Thank you. Excalibur 31 (PRODIGY Member) hi. i am your #2 fan i was just wondering if you have ever got hurt on the set of a music video Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) No, not badly. I've gotten hurt on stage a few times. I had to get a few stitches after dancing with a mike stand, but I never got hurt during a shoot. At one point I smashed a guitar on stage and the splinters went up my nose, and I looked like Geraldo with a bandage across my face. M486 (PRODIGY Member) What are your hobbies and interests Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I don't really have any, per se. Comedy and music have always been my hobbies, so now I'm lucky enough to be able to do it for a living. xWhitePnthyr (PRODIGY Member) When Is MTV Going to Have Al TV Back? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I believe they're repeating the most recent one this month. I doubt there will be a new one until the next album is released. msdobie1 (PRODIGY Member) Wjat ws u childhood like? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) It was a happy childhood. I was and still am an only child. My parents were protective, but loving and very supportive. brad wp (PRODIGY Member) Al, how do you feel the morning after a show? Everytime I go to one of your concerts, I can't get over how much energy you put into your shows. Are you terribly exhausted the next day? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) No, the next day I have to do another show. I try to stay healthy on the road, save my energy for showtime and give it everything I've got. msdobie1 (PRODIGY Member) When are u going to visit Mpls? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Friday. I'll be at the O'Shaughnessy Auditorium in Minneapolis. Moderator (Speaker) "Weird Al" will be performing in the following cities this month: Cedar Rapids, 14; Rosemont, Ill, 15; St Paul, 16; Peoria 17; Sioux City, 18; Wichita, 19; Omaha, 20; Denver, 22; Salem, OR, 24; Kelseyville, CA, 25; Sacramento, 26; Santa Cruz, 27th... Moderator (Speaker) In September, look for "Weird Al" in Las Vegas (6th); Valencia, Ca (7th); Spokane (10th); Yakima (26th); Bakersfield, Ca (10/2)... AncieMariner (PRODIGY Member) Weird Al, Who was Harvey The Wonder Hamster Based On? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) The name came from a friend of ours who used to work at CBS Records named Harvey Leeds. We have a homevideo called The Complete Al, and on it he sings the song "State of Shock." SoupNazi999 (PRODIGY Member) WHAT COLLEGE DID YOU ATTEND? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) The California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obisbo. HammySync1 (PRODIGY Member) Al, how long did it take you and the band to learn the yoda chant and to get all the moves in sync? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) It seemed impossible at first, but after reheasring a few weeks, it all started to come naturally. NJ27STEVE (PRODIGY Member) In concerts during the song One More Minute, how in the world do you take you underwear off without taking your pants off?? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) It's magic! Moderator (Speaker) In case you missed an earlier part of tonight's chat, you can check out the session in its entirety in a day or two. JUMP: chat transcripts. Tel your friends! Jello Biafri (PRODIGY Member) Why don't you come to Memphis? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) We haven't been on Memphis on this tour, but I'm dying to play the southern part of the country, and hopefully that will happen before the end of the year. LordMeteorit (PRODIGY Member) Is Wierd Al Really friends with Alaniss Moresset? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Sure, we used to go to the movies all the time....seriously, I haven't met her, but I hear she has a great sense of humor. LittlePearl2 (PRODIGY Member) al- have you covered any hole songs? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) No, I actually wanted to put a Hole song into the Alternative Polka Medley, but we weren't able to get a straight answer out of Courtney. WeirdrThanAl (PRODIGY Member) What do you think of Heather, a girl from Kalamazoo? Well, you should know who I mean. =) Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Yeah, she's a friend from Kalamazzo and she put together a bowling promotion we did there. She's very sweet. Al Yankovic (PRODIGY Member) Al, was the song "Melanie" based on any certain person? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Actually no. If it was based on anything, it was based on how obsessed I get in relationships. But I'm much better now, thank you. zSilvrPnthyr (PRODIGY Member) How do you manage to do key changes in the polka peices on your albums? And how do you pick what songs go in and which ones dont? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) It's something I work out and arrange so they flow as seamlessy as possible from one song to the next... Moderator (Speaker) BAD HAIR DAY is a big hit for Weird Al Yankovic. The new album is already platinum, proving to be Al's fastest-selling, highest charting album ever and his third album to go platinum... Please write to our guest now! Thanks for joining us. Moderator (Speaker) Weird Al Yankovic is currently reviewing your questions and answering as quickly as he can. Please continue to submit your questions. Thanks for joining us tonight... MsBehaved (PRODIGY Member) what formal training do you incorporate in your music? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I took three years of accordion lessons, and that's about it. The rest just comes from experience, hanging around people who know what they're doing. I write songs on a cheesy $30 Toys R Us piano. I figure if it sounds good on that, it will sound great with a band and a 48 track studio. LittlePearl2 (PRODIGY Member) did Nirvana get pissed after they saw your tenn spirtit thing? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) No. Kurt was always a fan of the song. I spoke to him directly when he was on the set of Saturday Night Live and he got a kick out of the fact that I was doing the parody. He mentioned in an interview once that Nirvana really made it when Weird Al did a parody. NJ27STEVE (PRODIGY Member) Since you like Stan Freberg, did you get his new album? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Absolutley. Great stuff. In fact, Stan gave me my copy of the album. I ran into him recently at a radio station. They interviewed the two of us together, and he autographed his copy for me. Joe and Nino (PRODIGY Member) Al, did you really sell your house for a lifetime supply of wax lips? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) No, that must have just been some wacky, zany gag of mine. Moderator (Speaker) Tonight's Guest for our Comic Genius chat is none other than Weird Al Yankovic. Please submit your questions to our guest now... MsBehaved (PRODIGY Member) Have you ever spoofed Elvis or Ol blue eyes?? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) One More Minute is kind of an Elvis soundalike. I haven't really done a Sinatra parody yet. Hollywood P (PRODIGY Member) When the movie Naked Gun 33 1/3 was made, were you and Vanna White dating? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Nope. I believe she was married and pregnant at the time. DAYTHOR (PRODIGY Member) At a concert in OShkosh you sang some songs that I'd never heard-I'm a nerd-?-A parody to the FRIENDS theme song, and some others, will they be on a CD, or have they been. Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Chances are they will remain concert only pieces. I like to have songs in concert that you can't hear anywhere else, so the hardcore fans can have something new to listen to. XJeLLy BeLLy (PRODIGY Member) What was your first album? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Ironically enough, it was called Weird Al Yankovic. DAYTHOR (PRODIGY Member) Will you ever be married? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) That's probably somewhere in the cards for me, it just hasn't happened yet. El Largo (PRODIGY Member) Who has the original tape of "Belvedere Cruising," your first song on Dr. Demento? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I would suppose the doctor has that. Moderator (Speaker) Next week at this time, join us when our guest will be actor/comedian John Leguizamo. John stars in THE FAN, the upcoming film that stars Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes... SoccerMan96 (PRODIGY Member) What music video did you have the most fun making? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I couldn't tell you the most fun, but "Amish Paradise" was a lot of fun because I got to use my relatives and I got to work with Florence Henderson, who's a real joy to work with. AnneH27 (PRODIGY Member) Hi, Al! I think it was so cool of you to turn down that offer to do a beer endorsement. do you ever wonder what it would be like if you hadn't turned it down? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) For a long time after I turned it down, there wasn't a day when I said "Gee, an extra $5 million would come in handy right now," but morally it seemed like the right thing to do. DeLorme (PRODIGY Member) What is you favorite subject to parodize with? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) It used to be food, but I've written so many food songs that I've decided to put a moratorium on it for the time being...I also do a lot of songs about TV....I'm trying to come up with new subjects and new topics....but TV and movies are big sources of material. Dysfunctional relationships are another source. Moderator (Speaker) Do you remember what Weird Al's first song parody was? It came back in 1979 when Weird Al Yankovic recorded "My Bologna," a spoof of The Knack's "My Sharona." Please submit your questions now to our guest. Lancer1997 (PRODIGY Member) Who approached you about doing the theme from "Spy Hard"? and what was it like to do a movie theme? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) The folks at Disney approached me, because Disney put out the movie. It was a real thrill to do another movie theme. It was my third theme. It was great to be able to basically deliver an entire opening title sequence to a major Hollywood movie. My first theme was for "Johnny Dangerously," and second was for "UHF." Moderator (Speaker) Weird Al Yankovic's latest work is BAD HAIR DAY. It's his 10th studio album (his fourth as a producer) and his first new full-length offering since 1993's gold ALAPALOOZA. The disc features 5 brand new parodies of some of the biggest hits of the past year, including the first single, AMISH PARADISE, a take-off of Coolio's megahit and Grammy Award-winning effort, GANGSTA'S PARADISE. tnw20774 (PRODIGY Member) HOW RICH ARE YOU Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) How rich am I? I always buy the large fries when I go to Burger King. Moderator (Speaker) In case you missed an earlier part of tonight's chat, you can check out the session in its entirety in a day or two. JUMP: chat transcripts. Tel your friends! krismas1 (PRODIGY Member) Do you come up with all the ideas; does your band help out? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) They don't really help me write the songs, but they add their own musical ideas all the time. I give them demo tapes to learn the songs, but they embellish it along the way. Moderator (Speaker) Weird Al Yankovic is currently on tour... His band includes guitarist Jim West; bassist Steve Jay; drummer/percussionist Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz and keyboardist Ruben Valtierra... Moderator (Speaker) Want to check out Weird Al Yankovic on the Internet? After the chat, get the latest news on our guest by visiting... http://www. allamermusic.com ComfyChair27 (PRODIGY Member) I really am enjoying your new songbook, Al, but why is only the melody line of "The Biggest Ball Of Twine In Minnesota" included? I'm actually teaching myself piano from your book and regret that there's no left hand for this song. Would it take up too much space? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I was told by the publisher that if any more would be used in the songbook, it would be too long. So it was a choice between the lead line or nothing at all. DeLorme (PRODIGY Member) Where did you come up with your wonderful name? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Well, it used to be Alfred, but I changed it to Al because I thought it would be easier to say...I don't know why they call me Weird...I guess they're just cruel. PATRIQ (PRODIGY Member) What is your favorite place to visit? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I like to go home every now and then. Moderator (Speaker) In case you missed an earlier part of tonight's chat, you can check out the session in its entirety in a day or two. JUMP: chat transcripts. Tell your friends! krismas1 (PRODIGY Member) Any chance of you doing parodies of 50's music in the future? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Again, "One More Minute" was sort of a 50s genre, as is "Since You've Been Gone," on the new album. As for new parodies, I'd consider it if I could combine it with something topical. Joe and Nino (PRODIGY Member) Al, Why was It's Still Billy Joel to Me and Chicken Pot Pie never released on an album? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Those were concert favorites. I did the Billy Joel song before I had a record deal, and before I became aware that you needed permission for parodies. That song was a little mean spirited and it's just as well that it never came out. Fuzzze (PRODIGY Member) First Al..I'd just like to honor your genius...I'm a top40DJ. and I dont know what life would be like without your music...alot more boring thats for sure....could you tell us about how you go about songwriting? Do your ideas take alot of time to develop, or is it more like spontaneous combustion? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) The originals take longer than the parodies because I have to write the music. But I spend a couple of weeks getting ideas and arranging them into the pop song framework. CuBaN1735 (PRODIGY Member) do you like to be weird like your name? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I prefer Al, thanks. DragoonWolf (PRODIGY Member) Whats your favorite song you made? Your funnest song? Have any pets? Whats your favorite video you made? Funnes video game? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Just Harvey the Wonder Hamster. takumi (PRODIGY Member) I love you, Do you love me? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) More than I can say. PATRIQ (PRODIGY Member) Is it harder or easier to parody music of today compared to music from the 70's and 80's? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) It's about the same. The musical styles have changed, but a hit song is a hit song, and there will always be targets. Hamstress (PRODIGY Member) Have you ever written a song about bowling? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) Not an entire song. I've had a few references to bowling in songs, like "Generic Blues." RichardNix (PRODIGY Member) Did Frank Zappa effect your musical works in any way? Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I've always been a big Frank Zappa fan. It as a big moment in my life when I met him, and I was blown away when he asked for my autograph for his then 13 year old son Dweezil. Weird Al Yankovic (Speaker) I've got to go gang. This has been a lot of fun. Thanks for having me. See you on the road. Moderator (Speaker) Thanks "Weird Al!" Moderator (Speaker) This was great... We really enjoyed having you on. And thanks to everyone for the great questions....
